GASBON METABOLISMでは、ガラスアーティスト・Yuri Iwamotoによる個展「Living Tree」を開催します。植物や動物がもつ「生きる／のびゆく」という生命の営みに着目し、ガラスという素材を通して形にした新作群を発表します。GASBON METABOLISMにおけるガラスアーティストの個展は本展が初めてとなります。
GASBON METABOLISM presents "Living Tree," a solo exhibition by glass artist Yuri Iwamoto. Focusing on the vital act of living and growing shared by plants and animals, the show presents new works given form through glass. This is the first solo exhibition by a glass artist held at GASBON METABOLISM.
何もない場所から突然芽吹く新芽やきのこ、一日で力強く伸びるたけのこ、砂漠を侵略するように広がるサボテンの群生。作家は、植物がもつ生える力・伸びる力、混沌を飲み込みながら生き続ける姿に強く惹かれてきました。そしてその力が、形こそ違えど動物の身体にも存在することに気づきます。植物と動物の境界を横断するように見出された共通性は、有機的な形態として空間に立ち上がり、会場全体に「生命の気配」を宿します。
Sprouts and mushrooms emerging from nowhere, bamboo shoots surging up in a single day, seas of cacti spreading as if invading the desert — Iwamoto has long been drawn to the force of plants to sprout, to stretch, to keep living while swallowing chaos. She came to see that this same force, in different form, also lives within the animal body. The commonality found across the boundary of plant and animal rises as organic forms, filling the space with a sense of life.
本展タイトル「Living Tree」は、地面から立ち上がり成長し続ける生命のエネルギーを象徴しています。会場であるGASBON METABOLISMの土地性——南アルプスの山々がそびえる風景や、かつて三脚工場として使われていた背景から得た「立つ」「支える」「生える」というイメージ——が新作群の方向性を形づくりました。近年の小型作品から発展し、トーテムポールのような大型作品群を新たに展開します。まばゆい自然光が降り注ぐ展示空間で、作品は光や風景を取り込みながら刻々と表情を変え、あらたなきらめきを放ちます。
The title "Living Tree" symbolises the energy of life rising from the ground and continuing to grow. The character of the site — the South Alps rising in the distance, and the building's past as a tripod factory — shaped the new works around the images of standing, supporting and sprouting. Developing from her recent smaller pieces, Iwamoto unveils large-scale, totem-like works. Bathed in brilliant natural light, the works take in the surrounding light and landscape, shifting moment to moment and casting a new radiance.
熱いガラスは、生き物のように動いています。そのエネルギーや"意思"を留めるように形にしています。わたしはガラスで"体"を作っているのだと最近考えています。揺れ動く柔らかいガラスに宿っている生命力や意思を、果実という体や、花という体、あるいは水という体を作ることで表現しようと試みています。野生の植物や不揃い野菜の、のびのびとした形に元気をもらう時のように、「ここに命がある」という喜びを歌っていくような作品をつくりたいと思っています。
Hot glass moves like a living thing. I give it form as if to hold its energy and its "will." Lately I think of it as making "bodies" out of glass — trying to express the vitality and will dwelling in soft, swaying glass by making the body of a fruit, of a flower, of water. Just as the free, unruly forms of wild plants and misshapen vegetables give me energy, I want to make works that sing the joy of "there is life here."
