Dancing Lines, Praying Lines
USUGROW「踊る線、祈る線」
PAST — 2026.3.6 — 6.22

About the Exhibition

GASBON METABOLISM presented "Dancing Lines, Praying Lines," a solo exhibition by USUGROW. Centred on drawing and calligraphy, USUGROW has long developed a practice closely tied to street culture. Beginning in the underground music scene of the early 1990s, he has built a distinctive approach while moving across music, skateboarding, apparel and more.

At its core is a DIY (Do It Yourself) spirit. Rather than relying on existing systems or contexts, USUGROW continues to work while negotiating with his own life and environment — an attitude reflected in the very nature of the works. Finely stippled drawings, calligraphy in a stateless script, and minimal expressions of ink and line hold both a street-born impulse and a quiet spirituality.

Interview

An interview with USUGROW, released alongside the exhibition. He speaks about a practice that began with flyers and album covers in the music scene, the stance he has maintained ever since, and the "line" he has long engaged with — lines woven as if dancing, as if praying, crossing the boundary between letter and image.

Featured Works

《涅槃像》 / Reclining Buddha

USUGROW 涅槃像 部分 USUGROW 涅槃像 部分

A large-scale work created during a 2024 residency at GASBON METABOLISM. Taking the reclining Buddha of Buddhist art as its motif, a quiet figure emerges through the repetition of countless lines. The Buddha has been one of USUGROW's recurring subjects since the early 1990s; here he worked while contemplating what the state of nirvana — the "realm of enlightenment" — might feel like. To depict an image symbolising peace is also an attempt to re-examine his own inner and spiritual state.

《Dance Series》

USUGROW Dance Series USUGROW Dance Series Bharatanatyam

A series based on dances from around the world. The bodily movements and rhythms of dances rooted in different cultures — flamenco, the Turkish sema, various Asian dances — are drawn out through flowing sequences of lines. Researching each region's music and cultural background himself, USUGROW composes the picture as line and rhythm overlap. His interest in how culture transforms as it spreads from place to place is symbolised in the flow of the lines.

《Live Painting Works》

2014–2016
USUGROW Live Painting Works

Works born from live painting at club events and the like. Painted improvisationally while listening to music deep in the night, the emphasis lies not on performance for an audience but on the act itself as it unfolds. The many layered lines and letters are traces of thoughts and fragments of words that surfaced in the moment — a record that fixes the flow of time directly onto the surface.
